controlling the gaze

Sayyidi wa sanadi Shaykh Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani (may Allah preserve him) said,

“Controlling the gaze is the first step to rectification (islah).

The one who doesn’t control his gaze will not be able to progress spiritually.”

Knowledge

Knowledge is not the abundance of narrations.  It is only a light that Allah Most High places in the hearts.

Prayers on the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

Hazrath Abu Bakr (Radiallahu anhu) has been reported to have said:’ Invoking blessing on the Prophet is more effective for washing away sins than cold water is for extinguishing fire. It is the source of illumination and blessings and the key to the doors of all-good fortune and bliss. Many Spiritual Guides who were very particular in this regard have been blessed with high rewards from Allah. Some of these guides have said: When there is no perfect guide (Murshid e Kamil) available to guide him one should make it incumbent on himself to invoke blessings on the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). This is the method by which a seeker attains union with Allah. (Waasil ba Haq).  This turning to the Prophet and salaat-o- salaam will be the best guide to acquire the noble manners and customs of the Prophet, and attain the highest perfection and nearness to Allah. It will also win him the nearness of the prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). (Madarrijun Nabuwah.). Whoever invokes blessing on the Prophet extensively is blessed with the Prophets love and association, and will be blessed with the vision of the prophet both in waking and in a dream. (Sheikh Imam Ali Mutaqqi’s Dawatul Kabir.)

The Essence of Sulook

Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) was not given the title of Hakeem-ul-Ummah, Mujaddid-ul-Millah for no reason. His brilliance can be seen in every letter of his writings, and every word of his lectures and statements. In two small phrases, he has summed up the essence of sulook. He says, “The essence of sulook is only the following:

a) Evil traits are replaced with praiseworthy traits

b) Heedlessness of Allah is replaced with focusing on Allah”

The Presence of the Prophet (sallahu alaihi wa sallam)

I found this on a forum I frequent:

In one of his letters on the life of the Prophets in the grave the perfected erudite mujaddid of the thirteenth century, faqih, muhaddith, polyglot orator, philosopher, and murshid of the Umma, Hadrat Sayyidina wa-Mawlana Abu al-Baha’ Dhul-Janahayn, Diya’ al-Din, the wonder of his time, the Accomplished Master of Shari`a and Haqiqa, al-Shaykh Khalid ibn Husayn al-Shahrazuri al-`Uthmani al-Shafi`i al-Naqshbandi al-Qadiri al-Kubrawi al-Djishti al-Mujaddidi (1190 or 1193-1242), may Allah Most igh sanctify his precious secret, said to one of his students:

“Adab requires us not to specify a precise location for the spirits of the Prophets, upon them the blessings of Allah Most High and His greetings of peace, and upon their House and all their Companions. One should never believe that there is a single spot in the world of contingencies in the [seven] heavens and the [seven] earths which is vacant from the expansion (madad) of their spiritual presences both generally and specifically (fa-la yu`taqadu anna fi `alami al-imkani min al-samawati wal-aradina buq`atan takhlu `an madadi ruhniyyatihim `umuman wa-khususan), and especially the spiritual presence of their liegelord and Seal, upon him and them blessings and peace. …

…. The perfect ones [among the Prophets] (al-kummal), and even some of the awliya’, are enabled by Allah Most High to take on form in several images, limited or unlimited; and they may have a single form which fills the universe.

Hence, it shows through unveiling, at times, that the heavens, the earths, the Throne, and the Footstool are filled with the Messenger of Allah, upon him and his family blessings and peace.”

One of my favorite books: SHARIAT AND TASAWWUF

SHARIAT AND TASAWWUF

http://books.themajlis.net/node/538

an excerpt:

The first step of the Mureed in the Path of Sulook is Sidq or sincerity so that the structure can be erected on a proper foundation. The Mashaa-ikh have said that people have been deprived of Wusool (gaining Diving Proximity) because they have destroyed the Usool (foundations).

Meme: 7 Weird Things

Sidi Saifuddin tagged me for this so here you go:

1. I am a total introvert. I feel alone in crowds, the larger the crowd generally the lonelier I feel. Most social events really drain my energy. It takes me a long time to open up and engage with the group.
2. On top of being an introvert I’m shy. I have always embraced being an introvert but really hated being shy. I hated it partially because of point 7 below. Part of me is not shy. In my teens I bloomed when it came to girls and I was fairly outgoing on that front but in most other social situations I was and still am apprehension almost to the point of being timid.
3. I’m a HUGE Jay-Z fan. Considering I stopped listening to all music in 2004 (coincidentally the year he so-called retired) he’s my achilles heel when it comes to music.

4. I never ate pizza until I was 20. (except once in kindergarden or 1st grade. It was a public school lunch pizza which scarred me most of my life against pizza).

5. I hate looking people in the eye. If feels totally uncomfortable and an invasion of my space. So much so I generally don’t even look at a person face when I’m talking to them.
6. I’m somewhat claustrophobic. Not to the point where I can’t ride in an elevator or anything like that but I do get panicky if I feel I can’t get out of an area. Once I was flying somewhere and we boarded the plane but due to weather we couldn’t take off. They decided not to unboard so sitting there I just felt like everything was closing in on me and started losing my breath. I started doing some salawat to calm down and alhamdulillah that worked. But ironically I have no problem with actually flying.

7. I’m a “true Gemini” meaning other than being born in the beginning of June sometimes I really feel like 2 different people in one body. It’s weird.

The reality of Sufism

From Shaikh Nuh’s Interpreter’s Log:

“Sheikh Yunus told her that she must be “the daughter of her moment,” to keep watch over her heart to see that she was always remembering Allah.  “The way,” he said “is based on three things alone: eating lawful food bought with a lawfully acquired income, doing what is obligatory, and performing the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah.” He told them that the reality of Sufism lay in a bringing something forth from oneself, namely a state of perpetual remembrance of Allah; not in being a learned person.  A person might be a great spokesman on Sufism, having memorized the terminology and knowing what the books said; but an illiterate who had awakened his heart and realized himself in perpetual remembrance (dhikr) would be greater in the eyes of Allah.”
